Debris Processing
Upon completion of a derelict fishing gear removal operation, containers holding the debris are transported back to Honolulu harbor, where they are received by Schnitzer Steel Hawaii Corporation. A key partner in the debris disposal process, this steel recycling company processes the derelict fishing gear, using their steel cutting equipment to mince the nets into small pieces. The processed net material is then transported to H-Power (a Covanta Energy facility) on Oahu's Westside, where it is incinerated to produce electricity. One hundred tons of derelict fishing gear provides enough electricity to power forty homes for a year! Thanks to our partners, this project not only restores coral reef habitat, it also provides a source of energy for Oahu's population.
