General Coral Reef Conservation Grants Program Multiple Opportunities Funds projects to help preserve, sustain, and restore the condition of coral reef ecosystems; promote wise management and sustainable use of coral reef resources; and increase public knowledge and awareness of coral reef ecosystems and issues regarding their conservation. Multiple Opportunities
Community-based Marine Debris Prevention and Removal Grants Program $15,000 to $150,000 Funds community-based projects that remove or prevent marine debris to protect or restore fish habitat 10/31/2009
2011 Pacific Islands Region Marine Turtle Program $750,000 program funds are anticipated The 2011 Pacific Islands Region Marine Turtle Program is designed to support specific programmatic activities for conservation, protection, or management of listed sea turtle species either occurring within the Pacific Islands Region (PIR) or those that have documented linkages to the PIR, such as turtles that may originate from areas outside U.S. jurisdiction but migrate through or forage within the PIR or may interact with PIR fisheries managed by NOAA/NMFS. The PIR is comprised of the exclusive economic zones (EEZs) adjacent to the State of Hawaii, U.S. territories of American Samoa, Guam, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), and the U.S. Pacific Remote Island Areas (PRIAs) of Jarvis, Johnston, Wake, Howland and Baker Islands, Kingman Reef, and Palmyra and Midway Atolls. Sea turtle species occurring in the PIR include: leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) loggerhead (Caretta caretta), green (Chelonia mydas), and olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea). 02/14/2011
2011 Pacific Islands Regional Office Hawaiian Monk Seal Recovery and Marine Mammal Response Program $200,000 program funds are anticipated The 2011 Pacific Islands Regional Office Hawaiian Monk Seal Recovery and Marine Mammal Response Program is designed to support specific programmatic activities related to promoting the recovery of endangered Hawaiian monk seals and supporting responses to marine mammal strandings throughout the main Hawaiian Islands. 02/15/2011
2011 Marine National Monument Program $250,000 program funds are anticipated In 2009, three Marine National Monuments (MNMs) were designated by Presidential Proclamation to protect the relatively undisturbed marine ecosystems that are flourishing with healthy coral reefs, large numbers of apex predators, fish biomass, and seabirds. Management plans for the Marianas Trench MNM, Rose Atoll MNM, and Pacific Remote Islands MNM are in preparation. These plans will guide management to preserve and protect the resources in these isolated locations. The Marine National Monument Program is designed to support projects to fulfill the objectives of the Proclamations and MNM management goals. 02/28/2011
2011 Hawaii Seafood Program $750,000 program funds are anticipated The 2011 Hawaii Seafood Program is designed to help strengthen and to sustain the economic viability of Hawaii's fishing and seafood industry through activities that promotes Hawaii fisheries products as high-quality and safe domestic seafood produced by a responsible and well-managed fishery. Projects may seek support for cooperative seafood safety research, technical assistance, and/or seafood education. 03/04/2011
2011 Marine Education and Training Mini Grant Program $150,000 program funds are anticipated Projects are being solicited to improve communication, education, and training on marine resource issues throughout the region and increase scientific education for marine-related professions among coastal community residents, including indigenous Pacific islanders, Native Hawaiians, and other underrepresented groups in the region. 03/04/2011
2011 Western Pacific Demonstration Projects $500,000 program funds are anticipated Program funds are intended to foster and promote use of traditional indigenous fishing practices and/or develop or enhance Western Pacific community-based fishing opportunities benefiting the island communities in American Samoa, Guam, Hawaii, and the Northern Mariana Islands. 03/04/2011
A Cooperative Institute for the Pacific Islands Region $19,000,000 The NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service and the NOAA Office of Ocean and Atmospheric Research invite applications for the establishment of a cooperative institute (CI) in the Pacific Islands Region that will focus on the themes of: 1) Ecosystem Forecasting; 2) Ecosystem Monitoring; 3) Ecosystem-based Management; 4) Protection and Restoration of Resources; 5) Equatorial Oceanography; 6) Climate Research and Impacts; 7) Tropical Meteorology; and 8) Tsunamis and Other Long-period Ocean Waves. The CI will be established at a research institution not only having outstanding graduate degree programs in NOAA-related sciences, but also located within a commuting distance of NOAA facilities on the Island of Oahu, HI allowing direct interactions with CI and NOAA scientists on a regular basis. The CI will provide significant coordination of resources among all non-governmental partners and will promote the involvement of students and post-doctoral scientists in NOAA-funded research. If the CI is comprised of multiple member institutions, only the lead institution applying for the award and where the CI will be established must satisfy the commuting distance requirement. This announcement provides requirements for the CI and includes details for the technical program, evaluation criteria and competitive selection procedures. Applicants should review the CI Interim Handbook prior to preparing a proposal for this announcement (available at http://www.nrc.noaa.gov/ci). 05/05/2011
