29th Annual Hawaii Yacht Club & Waikiki Yacht Club Junior Fishing Tournament

February 12, 2012

The BCH project was invited to the 29th Annual Hawaii Yacht Club & Waikiki Yacht Club Junior Fishing Tournament on Sunday February 12 to provide information to the participants. The catch-and-live-release rules were in place as was the stipulation for the anglers themselves to bait their own hooks, fight the fish, and re-move it from the hook. The barbless or circle hook emphasis for fisherman safety and less injury for the fish to be released was highlighted during the opening address to the tournament participants. Lots of fish were caught and at the weigh-in the comment of "I have never seen so many lively fish" was heard. The use of barbless hooks was credited for this as it greatly reduced the time and injury to the catches. No children were injured during the event but one captain was hooked in the butt. Luckily it only penetrated his pants and was barbless. All of the kids went home winners.
