Da Weighmaster's Obake Shootout III

October 30, 2011

The Obake Shootout had a very successful tournament weigh-in at POP Pier 38. Registration showed a total of 248 entrants with 95 in barbless, 52 in papio/ulua tagging, 50 in oʻio tagging, and 54 in the Mike Sakamoto Scholarship Challenge. Eight barbless anglers weighed in 12 fishes – 10 oʻio, 1 ulua, and 1 barracuda. The top 3 barbless oʻio took 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place in the Oʻio Division. This year the weigh-in was very hectic with a line of anglers and more than the usual amount of fishes being weighed in. The kids did not have as many restrictions on species so they brought in a wide variety of fishes. The one unique weigh-in fish was a live humuhumu, the State fish. The girl that caught it decided to keep it alive in an aerated bucket to weigh in so she could release it later. The Pacific Islands Fisheries Group members recognized her conservation efforts with a special announcement and prize.
