External Program Review 2002

PIFSC Coral Reef Ecosystem Division

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC) has a long-standing policy where the Center’s laboratories and divisions hold annual program reviews of research programs that are conducted by Center and other NMFS managers and scientists. In addition, the Center also holds special external reviews where noted scientists from outside NMFS are invited to conduct in-depth reviews of specific Center science programs or projects. During August 13 – 15, 2002 the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center’s (HL) new Coral Reef Ecosystem Division (CRED) will be the subject of an external review.

This document has been prepared to acquaint reviewers and others with the HL and to assist reviewers in their assessment of the CRED scientific programs. A brief overview of the Laboratory’s mission, goals, area of responsibility, and financial and personnel resources, as well as a summary of the Laboratory’s previous coral reef research, are presented first. In-depth narrative sections describing the science projects conducted by the CRED follow as individual pdf documents linked in the table of contents below.
