Cost-earnings Study of the Hawaii Small Boat Pelagic Fishery: 2007

Abstract

The objective of this study was to present an empirical snapshot of the economic and social characteristics of the Hawaii small boat fishery through a cost-earnings survey conducted in 2007-2008. Intercept surveys were carried out at boat ramps across the State of Hawaii. The survey was conducted in two phases to capture information on seasonal variation within the fishery. A total of 343 interviews were completed. Using these data, we described various aspects of the fishery, including classification of fishers (i.e., commercial versus recreational), levels of fishing activity, economic performance of fishers, and social aspects of small boat fishing in Hawaii.
